Ok, so the wifey is getting a camera for Valentine's Day (which also happens to be her B-Day as well) from her mother. Who bought her lil girl a Nikon D300 with a huge fucking lens that looks like a telescope (18-200mm), some sort of rubber molding that fits over the camera to protect it, but allows for good switch/toggle/button use and a sporty carrying case.

I bought her a set of diamond earrings ($1200+), which doesn't compare in price. Part of me thinks my mother-in-law outdid me on purpose.

But the camera is so complex I can't even begin to figure out all the damn buttons & features it brings in a day, let alone my wife (which BTW, photography is not a hobby of hers, just something she enjoys from time to time). Where as I bought her something I know she'll wear and use a lot. But then I can't seem to shake the fact that my gift seems inadequate compared to the M-i-L's gift. Who won this round me or the M-i-L?

Since I know Bone and Alejo_NIN are more experienced in this stuff, just how good is the camera and lens? Is this top of the line? Would it be something you guys would use? Is this something that a normal person would use? Does it warrant a retaliatory surprise gift to out-do the M-i-L?
